Hard Work Paying Off...

Now, I am proud to say that I am finally done my video! Well, aside from a few minor changes that is. However, I am done the main portion of my project, and it feels great! Basically, over the last week, I made a lot of progress. I finished my video, made my rubric, made a peer review form and collected feedback, and started making my Prezi (for the final presentation). I'm excited to finish it up!

To start, I finished making my entire Windows Media Maker Movie. I decided to redo the whole video from scratch, but I had the old video to use for reference. I made this decision because I had a lot of things to change, and I didn't like what I had created overall. Believe it or not, this time the video did not freeze up and the audio was synced with the video- I didn't need to use iMovie after all. This was a huge relief considering that I didn't have a Mac laptop at home. By now, I had learned so much about this software and how to use it. I applied many of the skills and techniques I had taught myself- transitions, animations, adding music, adding text, adding credits, and so on. While watching the completed video, I was so proud- my hard work definitely paid off!

The next step was making the rubric. Basically, we had to make a rubric, and the teacher would evaluate our project according to it. I decided to do a draft on paper, then edit it and type it out. Soon, I realized making a rubric was pretty hard and required a lot of thought! First, I looked around on the internet to find some sample rubrics. Then, I found a format I liked and wrote down some of the techniques they used to create their rubric. Next, I made a list of the areas I would cover in my rubric- pre-planning, process, product, peer review, presentation, and reflection. Then, I decided the key elements of each subtopic and created my rubric. It took a good two days to come up with an effective rubric. Before, I believed marking was such an easy task, but now I was proven wrong. There is a lot of thought and effort that goes into creating marking criteria, for sure!

After that, I made my peer review form. In my opinion, this was simple. I typed up ten relevant questions regarding my video and how it could be improved, referring back to my proposal specifications. Then, I made a list of potential people I could gather feedback from. Even though I only needed five peer reviewers, I added a few more to the list in case some people weren't able to complete the form. I shared my video on Google Drive. I asked ten people, and I received eight completed forms. Four of these peer reviewers were from our class. I think I collected my peer review effectively and successfully, and now all I had to do was apply my feedback to the video.

Finally, I started making my presentation on Prezi. I planned the format out first, and I am still in the process of finalizing the Prezi.

I plan to present some time next week, and I will soon put a finalized version of my video on this blog!

Back on Track!

I have finally come up with a workable solution, which is great! Basically, I will create the basis of my video in Windows Movie Maker, then import into iMovie where I can add some more effects, and finalize the video so the audio and video are in sync. It seems to be working fine, and by now I have gotten the jist of how iMovie works. Currently I am wrapping up the work on Windows Movie Maker, and I plan to finish the video very soon. I look forwards to see what my hard work has earned me!

Video Editing Issues

So after editing and putting together about one half of my video, I decided to play it see how it turned out. Well unfortunately, there was one huge issue. The audio and video weren't synced, and there were some other small here and there issues. I tried to fix it, and I did my part researching about it online. However, no luck there. I decided to lay out my options- what were they?

1. Troubleshoot and attempt to fix my Windows Live Movie

Advantage: I wouldn't have to redo half of my video
Disadvantage: It would probably waste a lot of time, time which I could spend editing

2. Move on and restart my video, using iMovie

Advantages: I can start editing my video right away, more options and features
Disadvantages: I have never used iMovie before, there is the possibility that I run into issues again, I can only work on it at school so I have limited time.

In the end, after some hard decision making, I have decided to use iMovie. There's much more flexibility editing-wise, and I can easily learn how to use it from my friends and online. I can make time to edit my video during lunchtimes and afterschool, along with class Genius Hour periods. I really hope this works out, because there's no turning back. Video making is much harder than I had expected!

One week later ...

One busy week later, I'm finally done editing ALL of my pictures- that's over 400 good shots, after removing quite a few blurry, choppy, and just plain bad pictures from my files. I've decided not to edit or add effects to the video clips, because once I assemble the video they will be played around with quite a bit anyways.

I decided to keep it simple and not move around the pictures from my IPod Touch to computer and vice versa until necessary. As mentioned in my previous post, I edited the pictures on my IPod Touch using an wonderful free app called InstaText. For all the photos I took using my actual camera, I uploaded them to my Google Drive and edited them using a free internet website called Photogramio.

After editing my pictures, I can honestly say that I took about half the time to edit double the amount of pictures on my IPod Touch. It was very efficient, and I only ran into one problem. After editing some pictures, I realized that some of my pictures had a little border, which I didn't like because it wasn't consistent throughout all my pictures. I re-edited all of those pictures, but it took me less than an hour- definitely worth it.

On the other hand, I also had about 100 pictures on the computer which I had to edit as well. This was not as fun and easy as editing on my IPod Touch. There were so many windows open on my screen, the pictures took forever to load, and I had to re-save them onto my Google Drive; it was all a big mess. After spending a good two days just organizing my pictures, I am proud to say that I am finally ready to create my video!

Photos and Videos, and More Photos!

Over the past three weeks, I have been running around taking hundreds of pictures and video clips for my project, through my IPod Touch and camera.

During the first two weeks, I focused on getting the testimonials done because I wanted to finish that before spring break. However, I came across a hurdle. After filming about five people, I was told by my friend that I should videotape people using the landscape orientation on my IPod Touch because if not, the video slides would have two black panels on the side- take a look at my "Lucky, My Cat" Video.

I realized that this was indeed a problem because after researching a bit, I found out that there is no way to change the orientation of the pictures after they are are shot! Armed with this new knowledge, I realized I had to retake the five testimonials. This put me back a few days, but I realized that in the end it would be worth it. If I had found out this information after taking all of my pictures, that would have definitely been a setback.

After that, I made a list of the pictures and video clips I would need for my video, and started making a schedule. Currently I have about one or two more pictures and video clips to shoot, before I start my video. In the meantime I have begun editing my pictures using an app called InstaText for the pictures on my IPod Touch.

I also came across another roadblock while shooting videos. For the few videoclips where I am talking, I initially put the camera on the top of a fence, on the window sill, and so on. Unfortunately, I realized that this, for the most part, wasn't working. Luckily my sister offered her helping hand in filming those few parts with me, and that worked out just fine. Yay!

Learning Windows Movie Maker

Over these past two days, I self-taught myself how to use Windows Live Movie Maker. I used the following websites:

Getting Started Tutorial- Windows Live Movie Maker (video)

As well, to test my knowledge, I made a short practice video about my cat Lucky. I spent about 4 hours editing it, but it was so fun and rewarding once I had watched the final outcome. Check it out!

My Proposal

Here's my Genius Hour proposal, so you can get a jist of my project!

Hello World!

I am Ruvini, and this will be my blog to record my process and reflections for my Genius Hour Project. So you might be asking, what is a Genius Hour Project? Well, it's a project on anything you decide, and you plan everything. Self-directed learning is becoming more common as society realizes that most learning happens when kids want to learn.
My Genius Hour Project is on my pursuit of happiness, because my passion in life is finding happiness. In my opinion, the way to happiness is finding a balance in life. Therefore, for my project I will be creating a video including five aspects of life which I believe create a balance in life. These five areas include determination, learning, active living, nature, and having fun. To make my video, the software I will be using is Windows Media Maker. This is my first time using this program, so first I have to learn the basic tools and techniques. I am very excited to get started with this project!
